Sports knee

Ligament, meniscus and kneecap injuries from cricket, football, kabaddi, the gym and running — and planning a return to sport in stages.

The basics

What happens in a sports knee injury?

Most sports knee injuries happen when the knee twists while the foot stays planted, or when it takes a direct blow. Ligaments such as the ACL hold the knee steady, the menisci cushion it, and the kneecap glides in a groove at the front. Any of these can be hurt in kabaddi, football, cricket, the gym or on a run.

Clear choices

When to get it checked

Some knee injuries settle with rest and physiotherapy. Others need a proper examination early.

Get seen soon if…

  • The knee swelled up within a few hours
  • You heard or felt a pop
  • The knee gives way or feels unstable
  • It locks, catches, or won’t fully straighten

Call 112 or go to emergency if…

  • You can’t put any weight on the leg and it looks deformed
  • The injury followed a road accident or major collision
  • The foot is cold, pale or numb

What’s involved

How care usually goes.

Examination

A careful look at how the knee moves, where it hurts and whether it is stable.

Imaging, if needed

X-ray or MRI when the examination suggests it will change the plan.

A plan

Physiotherapy-led care, or surgery when it is the right choice — decided together.

Back to sport

Return in stages, once strength, balance and control are ready.

What to send

Send these on WhatsApp.

  • Any MRI or X-ray reports
  • A short note: how and when the injury happened
  • The sport you play and your goals
  • Your name and the town you are travelling from

Send to +91 84477 30708. We reply with an appointment time. We don’t give a diagnosis or treatment advice over WhatsApp. For emergencies, call 112.

Questions

Common questions.

Should I keep playing on an injured knee?

It is safer to stop and get it checked, especially if the knee swelled quickly or gives way. Playing on an unstable knee can injure the meniscus or cartilage.

Is physiotherapy alone ever enough?

Often, yes. Many sprains and some ligament and meniscus injuries settle with a structured rehab programme.

Do you see school and college players?

Yes. Younger players should come with a parent or guardian.
