Knee arthroscopy
Keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery uses a small camera and fine instruments through tiny cuts to treat ACL and meniscus problems inside the knee.
The basics
What is keyhole knee surgery?
In arthroscopy, a camera about the width of a pencil is passed into the knee through a small cut, and the surgeon works through one or two more. The smaller cuts usually mean less disturbance to the knee than open surgery, but what happens inside — such as repairing a meniscus or rebuilding a ligament — is what decides recovery.
Clear choices
When does it help?
Arthroscopy is a way of doing a specific job inside the knee. It is not a general fix for knee pain.
It may help if…
- A torn meniscus is locking or catching the knee
- A meniscus tear is suitable for repair
- ACL reconstruction has been chosen
- A loose fragment is blocking movement
It usually isn’t the answer for…
- General wear-and-tear (arthritis) pain on its own
- Pain without a clear mechanical problem
- Knees that haven’t had a fair trial of physiotherapy
What’s involved
What to expect.
Assessment
Examination and imaging to decide exactly what needs doing.
The procedure
Small cuts, a camera and fine instruments.
Early recovery
Managing swelling, walking, and early exercises.
Rehab
A programme matched to what was done — repair takes longer than trimming.
Risks, explained
What can go wrong.
Every treatment carries risk. These are the general ones; Dr Aggarwal will explain what applies to you.
- Swelling and stiffness — common early on; rehab helps.
- Infection — uncommon.
- Blood clots — steps are taken to reduce the risk.
- Numbness near the cuts — usually small.
- Further surgery — sometimes needed if symptoms return.
What to send
Send these on WhatsApp.
- Your MRI report
- Any X-ray reports
- A short note on your symptoms — locking, catching, giving way

Questions
Common questions.
Will the scars be small?
Usually, yes — a few small cuts. The scars matter less than what is done inside the knee.
Can arthroscopy cure arthritis?
No. For general wear-and-tear, other treatments are usually more helpful. Dr Aggarwal will explain the options.
