A glossary to help you understand common words. It is not a reading of your scan — only a consultation can tell you what your report means for you.
Do you need an MRI?
Not always. Examination comes first.
Protect the knee, keep swelling down, and get it examined.
Glossary
Words in your MRI report, explained
- Effusion — fluid inside the joint (swelling).
- Bone bruise / marrow oedema — bruising inside the bone, often after a twist or blow.
- Sprain — a stretched or partly torn ligament.
- Complete / full-thickness tear — a ligament or tendon torn all the way through.
- Meniscal tear — a tear in one of the knee’s cushions; reports may describe its shape (e.g. “bucket-handle”, “radial”).
- Chondral / cartilage defect — damage to the smooth lining at the ends of the bones.
- Degenerative — related to wear over time.
